Father William Derby was born in California and grew up in and around New York City. He studied History and Art History at Rutgers and Harvard. He holds a divinity degree from the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge Mass. and a degree in Spiritual Direction from The General Theological Seminary in New York City. Ordained by Bishop Paul Moore Jr., Fr William served in many ministries in the Diocese of Montréal, Morelos (Mexico) and New Westminster before returning to New York to become Rector of St Edward’s in June 2010. Since 1993, Fr. William has been a professed member of the Oratory of the Good Shepherd, an Anglican religious Society for single clergy and laity founded in 1913. Over many years he has been a teacher, writer, speaker and retreat conductor and very involved in ecumenical and interfaith dialogues. He feels blessed to be able to offer his skills in francophone and Hispanic ministries as well as to use his historical and art historical training in leading many adult educational travel experiences across the globe. He enjoys art and music in almost all their forms and many other creative expressions of the human spirit. Being in NYC near to family and friends and in this diocese again after many years are blessings for which he is grateful; and being able to offer ministry in English and Spanish at St. Edwards and in its unique setting have made life all the richer.
